Published: May 2023

Summary

This report summarises phase 1 of research on women's experiences of gambling and gambling harms in Great Britain. It was commissioned by GambleAware and conducted by IFF Research, University of Bristol and GamCare.

Topics covered

role of gambling in women's lives

drivers of gambling among women

women's experiences of harmful gambling

prevention and reduction of gambling harms for women

Key findings

Women's gambling experiences differ from men's in important ways. Women are more likely to gamble because of:

- psychological factors like escapism
- social influences
- industry practices

Barriers to support include stigma and lack of awareness.  Gender-sensitive, integrated services are needed to better support women experiencing gambling harms.
