Building Knowledge of Women’s Lived Experience of Gambling and Gambling Harms across Great Britain: Phase 2

Author: IFF Research Published: September 2022

Summary

This report summarises phase 2 of research on women's experiences of gambling and gambling harms in Great Britain. It was commissioned by GambleAware and conducted by IFF Research, University of Bristol and GamCare.

Topics covered

women's motivations for gambling and experiences of gambling harms

barriers to accessing support for gambling problems

principles for effective gambling support services for women

Key findings

Women often view gambling as normal due to positive childhood experiences and many do not recognise when their gambling becomes harmful.

The main barrier to seeking help is not seeing their gambling as problematic enough to need support.

Women want gambling support that is easy to access, non-judgmental, and tailored to their needs.
