Evaluation of GambleAware’s Youth Harm Minimisation Programme

Author: R. Ives Published: September 2018

Summary

This report by Richard Ives evaluates two educational projects funded by GambleAware to develop and test gambling education interventions for young people in England and Scotland.

Topics covered

  • development and testing of gambling education resources
  • implementation in schools and informal settings
  • evaluation of interventions and resources

Key findings

Many children engage in gambling-like activities without recognising them as gambling because gambling advertising often uses the same:
  • cartoon-like graphics
  • bright colours
  • sounds
Regulation is required to ensure that gambling adverts state that gambling content is not for children. More in-person education for children, parents and schools is needed to show the potential risks of online gambling-like games.
