Follow-up study of loyalty card customers: Changes in gambling behaviour over time

Author: H. Wardle, E. Fuller, N. Maplethorpe and H. Jones Published: January 2017

Summary

NatCen Social Research conducted a follow-up study of loyalty card customers for bookmakers, examining changes in gambling behaviour over time.

Topics covered

  • changes in gambling participation over time
  • changes in problem gambling status
  • predictors of developing gambling problems

Key findings

Problem gambling rates remained similar overall, but there was significant individual variation. Those with low incomes and from non-White backgrounds were more likely to develop problems.
Playing machines in bookmakers weekly was associated with increased risk. Promoting targeted interventions and reducing stigma could help vulnerable groups access support.
