Author: B. Gunstone & K. Gosschalk Published: December 2020

Summary

This report by YouGov examines gambling behaviours, harms and treatment needs among ethnic minority communities in Great Britain, based on surveys conducted in 2019 for GambleAware.

Topics covered

prevalence of gambling and problem gambling amongst ethnic minority communities

gambling behaviours and activities

use of and demand for treatment and support

barriers and motivators to seeking help

Key findings

20% of adults from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities scored one or higher on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scale, higher than White adults (12%).

Demand for treatment is higher amongst people from ethnic minority backgrounds, but awareness of help is low.

Promoting telephone-based support and emphasising confidentiality could encourage more to seek help.
