Author: S. Sharman Published: January 2018

Summary

This report by the University of Lincoln and NatCen Social Research, commissioned by GambleAware, details the development of tools to identify and support homeless people with gambling problems.

Topics covered

  • relationship between gambling and homelessness
  • development of screening and support tools
  • feedback from cognitive testing
  • recommendations for future validation and development

Key findings

The research produced three tools to help identify and support homeless gamblers:
  • an information sheet for staff
  • a screening questionnaire
  • a resource sheet for gamblers
Cognitive testing showed the tools were generally well-received. Further large-scale validation is needed to assess the tools' effectiveness for measuring gambling prevalence in homeless populations.
