Skins in the Game

Author: The Royal Society for Public Health Published: December 2019

Summary

The Royal Society for Public Health report explores young people's attitudes towards gambling and its impact on health and wellbeing. It covers emerging forms of gambling in gaming and sports.

Topics covered

  • gambling harms and young people's health
  • loot boxes and skin betting in video games
  • sports sponsorship by gambling companies

Key findings

A majority of young people aged 11 to 24 see purchasing a loot box (58%) and taking part in skin betting (60%) as forms of highly addictive gambling.
The Royal Society for Public Health is calling upon the government to update legislation around gaming and gambling. This is to ensure that both loot boxes and skin betting are fully legally defined and recognised as forms of gambling.
