Minority Communities & Gambling Harms: Qualitative and Synthesis Report

Author: N. Moss, J. Wheeler, A. Sarkany, K. Selvamanickam, D. Kapadia Published: December 2023

Summary

This qualitative report by Ipsos UK is part of a wider research programme focussing on minority groups' lived experience of gambling harms in Great Britain. It's based on interviews and app diaries conducted in 2022 and 2023 for GambleAware.

Topics covered

drivers of gambling behaviour amongst minority groups

attitudes and stigma related to gambling

barriers and enablers to accessing gambling support

experiences of racism and discrimination

Key findings

Minority groups face unique challenges that can increase gambling harms, including financial struggles and using gambling to cope with discrimination. Stigma within communities and from wider society creates barriers to seeking help.

Better awareness of culturally appropriate support and addressing mistrust of services could improve access to help for those experiencing harms.
