London, 24 January 2023: GambleAware, the leading charity keeping people safe from gambling harms, has today published the list of donations and pledges it received during the third quarter (Q3) of the current 2022/23 financial year.
In order to be transparent in the context of the current voluntary funding arrangements, GambleAware publishes details of donations and pledges received from those that derive an income from gambling in Britain on a quarterly basis.
Between 1 April 2022 and 31 December 2022, the charity received a total of £13,209,805.12. This was given in the form of voluntary donations from the gambling industry and additional donations. No income has been received from Regulatory Settlements in the financial year to date.
Income from two of the largest operators accounted for 90.4% of the total donations received in the period from April-December 2022. The income from all other operators made up 9.6% of the total.
The contributions from the largest four operators have been rising in value since 2020. This is due to a commitment brokered by the Betting & Gaming Council for the largest operators to increase the percentage of research, prevention and treatment funding as a proportion of Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) to 1% by GambleAware’s 2023-2024 fiscal year.
All operators have until 31 March 2023 to make a donation to GambleAware which can be recorded as a RET contribution in GambleAware’s 2022-23 fiscal year. The full list of contributions will be reported to the UK Gambling Commission in April as part of the charity’s agreement with the Commission to share data on operator’s annual RET contributions.
All those who profit from gambling are asked to donate a minimum of 0.1% of their annual Gross Gambling Yield to GambleAware each year; and those with an annual GGY of less than £250,000 to donate a minimum of £250.
All funds donated to GambleAware go towards activity which is delivered against the charity’s commissioning objectives. As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability, we recently published our commissioning intentions which set out our strategic commissioning approach for the National Gambling Treatment Service moving forward. These commissioning intentions support the delivery of our Organisational Strategy and are based on a robust understanding of population needs and the outcomes we need to achieve, to ensure the most cost-effective and impactful use of our resources.
GambleAware continues to call for a compulsory levy to support a sustainable, long-term funding model and ensure the successful delivery of the research, treatment and prevention services needed to prevent and treat gambling harms.
